5 Podcast Topics for Your Financial Advisor Podcast

This article originally appeared on Advisorpedia on March 4th, 2022, and can be found here.

Since the early 2000s, podcasts have continued to grow steadily in popularity. In fact, in 2022, 51% of the population has listened to a podcast and around 78% are familiar with them. And as you know, consistently creating content for your audience is a great way to connect, drive engagement and show that you are an industry thought leader. However, just like blogging, it can sometimes be difficult to continuously think of fresh topics for your listeners. In this blog, we’re sharing five podcast topics that will grow your follower base plus tips for finding more.

5 Podcast Topics for Your Advisor Podcast

When choosing your podcast topics, there are a few questions that you should ask yourself first:

  1. Who is my audience?
  2. What are their most pressing needs?
  3. How much does this topic interest YOU?
  4. What makes your topic unique?

Once you have answered these so that you can really connect with your listeners, you can begin to choose your topics.

1. Cryptocurrency and Bitcoin

Cryptocurrency is an incredibly hot topic right now, and even if you don’t specialize in this, providing your listeners with information about it is a great way to connect and drive listenership. Just a few years ago, hardly anyone knew anything about the world of crypto trading, and now it seems to be everywhere. In fact, there are currently 300 million people using crypto with 6,000 different kinds. And that number is rising, so you can definitely expect people to tune in to this podcast. It’s also a topic that can be fairly tricky, so breaking down something like this and making it easier to understand is going to really help.

UNCHAINED PODCAST

Host Laura Shin’s weekly, hour-long podcast covers a lot of ground, from talks with industry initiators and pioneers about how crypto assets and blockchains will change the way money is earned, spent, and invested to more topical discussions. Her podcasts are mostly interviews, so listeners can learn more about what thought-leaders in the industry have to say about this topic.

2. Summarize Breaking News and The Potential Impact on Listeners

For this podcast topic, you should summarize breaking news and the potential impact that it would have on your listeners. By creating a podcast on recent “hot topics,” you are able to keep listeners “in the know” and show that you are keeping up with what is happening in the news, showing that you are always on the lookout for how certain things will impact your audience.

3. Market Commentary

The stock market and its fluctuation are more often than not going to be a concern for your clients. Your listeners may be tuning in to find out what factors affect stocks in your portfolio or they may want a general rundown of the past week or they may want some stock picks to research themselves. Whatever it may be, this is a great podcast idea to try out.

FORWARD THINKING WEALTH MANAGEMENT

Twenty Over Ten client, Forward Thinking Wealth Management put out a recent podcast on inflation, markets, interest rates, and topics associated with this. Founder, Dan Johnson, CFP® does a great job of covering everything that listeners need to know to put their minds at ease when it comes to discussing the market and the fluctuations.

4. The Updated SEC Ad Rule

We have done webinars on the updated SEC Ad Rule which went into effect in May 2021. This change will have a huge impact on advisors that are marketing their firm, and like many technical topics, there are going to be a lot of questions. When the podcast is considered “a hot topic,” but there are also a lot of questions surrounding it, then this is going to really boost SEO rankings and drive more people to your podcast page.

In the podcast below from Richey May, they discuss:

  • The new advertising rule and its implications
  • Regulatory environment expectations
  • Differences to consider for crypto funds vs. traditional hedge funds
  • Common questions and pitfalls to avoid to keep your fund in compliance

This is a very hot topic right now, so it’s sure to provide your listeners with plenty of awesome information.

5. Interview Experts in the Industry

Interviewing experts in the industry is a great way to share information with your audience that you may not have thought of, or put a different perspective on things. It always boosts your credibility and can really ramp up the podcast. The ProudMouth podcast produces great content to help financial advisors with their marketing, and they have new industry experts weekly. The Q&A session with the host is a great way to boost engagement and connect in a conversational way.

How to Find Podcast Topics

How can you find more? Picking out the perfect topics week after week can be difficult, but there is something to keep in mind that can make it easier.

1. See What Is Trending

Try to find out what people are talking about online as this is a great way to find topics that people want to learn more about. You can check out Google Trends while also looking into the trending topics sections on most social media platforms. These areas are full of news stories and topics that are popular locally and nationally.

2. Join Social Media Groups

Join social media groups that are in your industry or niche and check the pages and forums on a regular basis so that you can see what is trending and drop podcasts when those topics are being talked about by a lot of people.

3. Watch the News

It’s always a good idea to keep up with current events, especially since there are so many topic ideas in the news. Subscribing to a trusted news publication or a newsletter from someone in your niche is a great way to get the conversation going with trending news and topics.

4. Check out the Competition

Keep an eye out for what your competitors are doing. Are there any topics that they did that really boosted their performance? Maybe they had a few podcasts that didn’t do much for them. When it comes to how they run their podcasts, make note of aspects that you like and ones that you don’t really like and you can format your podcast similarly.

5. Expand on Previous Topics

We talk about the importance of repurposing your content, and this goes for your podcasts, as well. Choose a previous topic that you already discussed and expand on that. If there are a lot of different parts, then you could even turn this into several episodes on each topic.
